Floating Christmas – Christmas Installation, PMQ, Hong Kong

Within the courtyard of PMQ—a revitalised modernist heritage building in the heart of Hong Kong—AaaM Architects redefined the language of festive installations through a participatory spatial intervention. Moving away from the commercially driven spectacle of conventional Christmas trees, the project responds to the dense urban context and cultural saturation of seasonal displays by proposing an alternative: a light, floating pavilion that invites interaction rather than passive viewing. Suspended seven metres above the open courtyard, a 17m by 11m semi-translucent, wave-like structure hovers like a cloud, transforming the familiar playground into an immersive environment where architecture dissolves into atmosphere.

The pavilion materialises as a delicate yet dynamic enclosure formed by thousands of metres of fishline, weaving a porous boundary that contains yet liberates movement. Within this floating volume, vividly coloured helium and air-filled balloons drift freely, animated by natural wind and a concealed air-blowing system. Constructed primarily from translucent vinyl mesh where commonly used in roller blinds, the suspended “cloud” is composed of layered strips arranged in varying densities. This meticulous modulation allows natural light to filter through during the day, casting soft gradients across the courtyard, while at night, projection lighting transforms the structure into a glowing, ever-evolving canopy. Visitors are invited not only to inhabit the space but to shape it, drawing on balloons and releasing them into the pavilion, turning individual gestures into a collective, living installation.

By merging architectural design, lighting, and principles of everyday science, the pavilion becomes a platform for imagination, interaction, and shared experience. “We envision architecture as a stage for freedom—where people can slow down, step outside routine, and reconnect through play,” notes co-founder Shuyan Chan. Beyond its spatial qualities, the pavilion extends its role as a social condenser by accommodating performances ranging from music to cross-cultural collaborations, including a dialogue between piano accordion and traditional Chinese huqin. In doing so, the project transcends its role as a seasonal installation, fostering meaningful connections between people, place, and culture. It demonstrates how temporary architecture can catalyse lasting impact and reclaim public space as a site of participation, delight, and collective memory.
