Transforming Industrial Legacy into an Innovative Community Hub​

As the largest chemical reagent R&D base in southern China, the Guangzhou Reagent Chemical Plant boasts over 50 years of industrial history. The lush vegetation within the site bears witness to the unique coexistence of chemical industry and nature. The core challenge faced by AaaM Architects was to transform this industrial relic into a modern complex integrating leisure, entertainment, and maker/office spaces while preserving its profound historical and ecological values. Through meticulous adaptive reuse strategies, the original industrial structures have been converted into an innovation hub bridging past and future.

Symbiotic Design Philosophy Centered on a Green Boulevard​

The planning establishes a "Green Boulevard" as the central multifunctional outdoor space, by opening up the factory boundary wall and redesigning the street interface, it guided visitors through interconnected lanes and creating vibrant social pathways. The architectural and landscape design draws inspiration from reagent pipelines, translating them into a distinctive façade language that shapes a visual identity unlike any other creative park. The pipe-like arches, functioned as integrated lighting and signage, were set along the "Green Boulevard", strengthening the publicness along this main axis. This concept not only echoes the site's industrial history, but also reinforces the factory's original identity through innovative design, perfectly embodying AaaM's mission of "empowering communities through architecture."

​Multi-Layered Spatial Strategy and Functional Integration​

During the masterplanning phase, the project was strategized to complete separate vehicles verse pedestrians, allowing it to be 24/7 car-free zone for all sort of public activities. By planning multiple public spaces of all sizes around retail, dining, co-working, and exhibition programs, including the central plaza, the design activates the entire area through the "urban acupuncture" concept. Northwest and northeast entrance plazas facilitate pedestrian-vehicle separation and gathering functions, while extended plazas broaden opportunities for events and social interaction.
The new program distribution skillfully balances heritage conservation with contemporary needs, constructing a maker community centered on publicness where commerce and nature harmoniously blend.

Setting a New Benchmark for Industrial Heritage Revitalization

This project achieves not only the physical transformation of industrial remains but also establishes a profound dialogue between history, nature, and innovation through ecological and architectural integration. The effective activation of multiple plaza spaces injects sustained vitality into the park, making it a exemplary model for industrial heritage renewal in Guangzhou.
The project provides valuable experience for the creative reuse of urban industrial sites, demonstrating the far-reaching value of architecture in empowering communities.
