The project needed to balance inclusivity, educational value, and flexibility while addressing practical constraints of mobility, safety, and longevity. We saw the opportunity to redefine this overlooked threshold as an experiential entry point into Hong Kong’s premier museum of visual culture.

Turning Transitional Spaces into Approachable Gateways of Artrming plastic bottles into printing filament through 3D technology

The M+ Museum invited us to activate its gallerylevel foyer—an area often treated as a transitional corridor—into a meaningful space for families and children. The challenge was to overcome the passive, “waiting” and “transitional” character of the foyer by transforming it into a dynamic environment where art could spark dialogue and curiosity before visitors even entered the main galleries.

Designing with Purpose: Learning through Playful Encounters

At the heart of the project was the vision to empower communities—especially young audiences—by embedding learning into the museum journey. The Gallery Play carts are a family of four mobile carts, each designed around a distinct pedagogical strategy: elimination and substitution, visual association, question-generation, and slow looking. Inspired by contemporary art education practices, the carts provide children, caregivers, and cross-generational groups with tools to observe, question, and imagine. They transform abstract art appreciation into accessible, playful interactions, directly echoing AaaM’s mission to merge design with empowerment, curiosity, and inclusion.

From Concept to Reality: Tools for Participatory Appreciation

The design process focused on creating clear, intuitive installations that could support M+ educators and ambassadors in their programming. Each mobile cart integrates tactile elements, prompt cards, and interaction cues that invite visitors to slow down, compare, imagine, and converse. Rather than prescribing fixed interpretations, the carts facilitate moments of co-discovery between parents and children, educators and learners, peers and strangers. By turning observation into play, and play into dialogue, the Gallery Play carts encourage visitors to experience art as something shared, participatory, and approachable.

Shaping Futures: A Scalable Model for Inclusive Museums

The Gallery Play carts have already transformed how visitors experience the museum foyer. Families now linger longer, children take the lead in art interpretation, and educators gain versatile tools to spark conversations. Feedback highlights deeper retention, collaborative play, and more confident first encounters with art. Beyond M+, the project offers a scalable model for institutions worldwide, demonstrating how thoughtfully designed, mobile installations can empower diverse audiences. By making art appreciation more accessible—especially for families— The Gallery Play carts embody AaaM’s belief that architecture and design can act as catalysts for inclusivity, creativity, and
intergenerational dialogue.
