Cuddle Bubble – Summer Installation, PMQ, Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s high-density urban environment often presents challenges of functional and creative limitations in public spaces. As a historic revitalization project, PMQ needed to create a temporary installation that combined artistic value with social impact within a constrained courtyard area. We identified the intense summer heat as a design opportunity—transforming physical limitations into an innovative solution through lightweight, low-intervention installations.

We employed a “minimalist yet sophisticated” strategy, creating multi-layered experiences through 24 floating cloud-like elements and over 60 groundlevel bubble devices. The combination of semiautomatic and manually operated installations empowered visitors to actively shape their spatial experience. Delicate membrane materials and strategic lighting design enhanced the day-night contrast, extending the space’s functional duration. Environmentally friendly materials and modular structures ensured rapid installation and dismantling, demonstrating innovative responses to temporary urban spaces.

Centered around the poetic metaphor of “bubbles,” the project drew inspiration from childhood toys and summer dreamscapes to create shared experiences across generations. We conducted thorough observations of public needs for lighthearted, healing spaces, translating the abstract concept of “coolness” into tangible interactive installations. This conceptual approach perfectly aligned with architecture’s mission to empower communities—activating public participation while strengthening emotional connections between people and space, ultimately transforming the design into a carrier of collective memory.

The project attracted unprecedented visitor numbers, becoming PMQ’s signature summer event. It validated the viability of lightweight interventions to activate community vitality, establishing a new paradigm for public space design in high-density cities. More significantly, the installation prompted governmental and commercial institutions to reconsider the social value of creative design, inspiring similar projects across broader urban contexts—truly realizing architecture’s enduring impact as a medium for social transformation.
