Bridging Design and Education
Both design and education shape the future. Launched by AaaM Architects in 2024, Room D builds on the studio’s design education practice developed since 2017 and explores how the two can mutually reinforce each other to create more generative and transformative learning experiences.
Room D translates methods from design, public space, participatory processes, community research and cultural projects into learning experiences, workshops, resources, tools, frameworks and training for different ages and contexts.
Design is approached as a medium for learning. Space, materials, technology, communities and everyday life provide starting points for observation, enquiry and making. Participants learn to understand different perspectives, organise complex questions, make choices, and develop ideas into outcomes that can be discussed, tested and extended.
Where Design Creates Real-World Impact
Room D treats schools, homes and communities as sites for learning in practice. Shared spaces, sports courts, corridors, reading areas, public facilities, community environments and school data all become real subjects of collective enquiry.
Participatory design brings children and other stakeholders directly into the design process. Through observation, interviews, documentation, discussion and making, participants understand different lived experiences, develop empathy, and realise ideas within real constraints. Facilitators provide design methods, professional knowledge and feasibility frameworks to support the development and refinement of their ideas.
Design Education Integrating Technology and Community
Room D develops through two interconnected learning streams.
Design × Technology explores how artificial intelligence, data, coding, digital media and emerging tools can support research, creative development and expression. Technology helps participants organise information, extend concepts, test possibilities and communicate outcomes, while the sense of inquiry, original observation and final judgement remain with the participants.
Design × Community begins with people, place and public life. Participatory design is used to understand user needs, community experience, campus culture and spatial relationships, and to translate these insights into co-created ideas, prototypes or environmental proposals.
Both streams are grounded in the logic of design thinking: beginning with immersion and observation, progressively defining questions, aligning shared goals, developing and comparing directions, and producing tangible outcomes ranging from models, 1:1 prototypes, spatial proposals, AI or digital interfaces, to visual works.


Technology Supporting Creativity
Room D integrates artificial intelligence, data tools and digital platforms into the design process to support organisation, analysis, ideation, simulation and communication. Participants first build an understanding of the site, users and issues before using technology to expand and test directions.
This sequence preserves the central role of people. Technology can accelerate exploration, but it does not replace empathy, value judgement or original thinking. Room D develops technological literacy so that participants can meaningfully lead and critically engage with technology in relation to spatial and social contexts.
Extending Design Culture across Learning Communities
Room D works with young children, primary and secondary students, teachers, parents and adult learners. Its formats include school-based programmes, co-creation workshops, project-based learning, talks, teacher exchanges, parent engagement, family activities and learning-tool design.
Room D emphasises learning as part of everyday life. When people participate in shaping the environments they use daily and see how their observations and decisions can create change, design produces not only outcomes, but also deeper understanding, engagement and a sense of belonging.
